Fog/driving lamps

Postby chris667 » Thu Dec 22, 2011 9:59 pm

Much as I like my C15, its headlamps are SHOCKING.

I always put the Romahome's poor headlights down to being old, but it appears to be a design issue. They're noticeably not as good as my dad's Vauxhall of a similar age.

Has anyone put driving lamps on their C15? I'm sure it must have been done with the sportier cars in the past. But any pointers would be appreciated.

There was this very smart looking romahome Chris that appeared on eBay back in July that had some driving lights added - ebay-trophee-inspired-c15-romahome-t930.html

I quite like that. :D

Just out of curiosity, are any of these headlamp upgrade bulbs any good?

I've used some Osram ones supposedly 30% brighter. They were definitely an improvement. But if you're wasting your time if the reflectors aren't in tip top condition.

On mY C15 I found the something like 35 Watt standard HB12s
were dim and well... crap.
So, I bought a pair of Xenon 60/55w bulbs from Ebay for
About £7.50
A significant improvement
They have a brighter, whiter output as opposed to the warm yellow glow

Remember they're HB12s I saw some incorrectly listed (for my 2001 van )
as H4

This is whaT I bought and use
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Xenon-HIGH-Ma ... 4148e2d33b

They also included 2 blue sidelight bulbs which dont fit my C15 but I wasnt that bothered

If you want to throw money at it you could go for HID kits
the various incandescent bulbs Xenon,Kryptonium, unobtainium etc are all much of a muchness
where 90% of the energy is lost in heat
HIDs are brightest and more effiicient
LED headlamps are appearing but aint quite there yet in terms of brightness and will still
be very expensive

Bolting on extra light is a dubious choice as fog lights should only be used in fog
and driving lights should only be used with high beam

Thanks Reg,

I'll get some of those for my C15.

Every car parts supplier can provide you some H4 lamps with p55t fitting. Thats an improvement for sure.

Strictly speaking, it's not incorrect. Simply "H4" is insufficient to specify a bulb as there are two sorts of H4 bulbs - the H4 P43t is the more common type with the three prongs on the base. The less common H4 P45t is the round base like you have - which is actually the fitting from the old 45/40 tungsten lamps of the late 70's.

HID conversions are also a dubious thing for MOT's as IIRC they aren't legal unless you have automatic level adjusters (which of course you won't have). Also, they're not that expensive - you can get a 35W kit for £20 now.

You could always go for Cibie Bi-Oscars which use an H4 bulb to give you fog and driving lamps in a single unit.
