Rustproofing.

Postby chris667 » Thu Dec 08, 2011 8:02 pm

One of the first things I'm doing on my van is ensuring I keep it for a long time. It won't be a daily driver, it will be looked after, and I hope to still be using it in 20 years.

Now, unless they improved the rustproofing over what my dear old Romahome had, I think some sort of underseal is in order. It's had something in the past (it really is spotless down there, the old owner was so fastidious he changed the tyres because at 5 years and 20,000 miles because in his words "they looked a bit scruffy"). But I have no idea what he used.

What would you use? I'm considering:
Dinitrol Pros: Well regarded, different grades for different areas of van. Cons: Bloody expensive (£150 for my van, assuming a DIY job)
Waxoyl Pros: Cheaper than dinitrol, I've used it before on the floor of my boat. Cons: Mixed reviews in car forums
Diesel Pros: Cheap, will cover everything. Cons: Not sure if it will work
Other You tell me!
Or if you know of someone that will do a really first-rate job of it for me, I might be prepared to pay to have it done professionally if it's going to be better than I can do. But I don't mind getting a bit dirty.

Are you talking about inside or outside ?

For inside (sills, etc) I'd use Waxoyl. Outside (floorpan, etc) I'd use proper underseal either brush on or the spray-on stuff you need a compressor for. Any rust would be wirebrushed and painted with Jenoseel first.
Flat out - like a lizard drinking

Make sure the surface you are about to coat is rust free and heat it up a bit with a gas torch or paint stripper so there will be no moist between the metal and coating.
It's amazing how you can see the water disappear (the quantity) when you heat a piece of bare metal.
